Conservatory 101

We wanted to answer some common questions about extending, specifically adding a conservatory, to help you get on the right path to your home renovation.

January is the month most homeowners start to think about changing their home and assessing whether an extension could be something for them.

More and more we hear about people improving their existing home, by extending or adding a conservatory, rather than moving home in the pursuit of finding more space for a growing family or just because they’d like a bigger living area. We call this movement, ‘Improve, Don’t Move’, and we’ll be exploring this throughout the new chapter of our Style and Inspiration LookBook, which will be available online from next month.

In the meantime, we wanted to answer some common questions about extending, specifically adding a conservatory, to help you get on the right path to your home renovation.

So whether you’re determined to invest in a conservatory in 2017, or are brand new to the idea, our Conservatory 101 guide is brimming with advice to allow you to decide whether a conservatory is definitely the right option for you.

What are the benefits of a conservatory?

Not only is a conservatory a good investment to add value to a home, but it is the easiest and most cost-effective way of adding an extra room.

Typically consisting of a transparent ceiling and walls, conservatories champion natural light and bring in extra sunlight into homes. Investing in a u-PVC conservatory with double glazing will give you the best of both worlds all year round – a warm and cosy space for winter, and a cool, sunny room in summer months. And, if you opt for self-cleaning glass, you won’t ever need to worry about adding more chores to your weekly to-do list.

Do you need planning permission for a conservatory?

Unlike an extension, you don’t necessarily need planning permission when building a conservatory. Adding one to your house is considered to be permitted development, not needing an application for planning permission, subject to certain limits and conditions. You can find the full list of exemptions, here https://www.planningportal.co.uk/info/200130/common_projects/10/conservatories

What are the different styles of a conservatory?

You’ll be surprised at how many different styles of conservatory there are on the market. We offer over 10 different styles of conservatory, from Georgian to Gable, with different styles of glass, colour and roofing options so there truly is something for everyone. For full details visit our conservatories page.

How long does a conservatory take to build and how much do they cost?

A fully-fitted conservatory can take anywhere between 8 – 14 weeks to build, but this will depend on the size, spec and manufacturing period.

Prices vary, so we don’t like to provide a price online, since everybody’s home and requirements will be so vastly different. We can, however, work to any budget and ensure we have a range of products to suit all tastes and needs.
